April 26, 2010: "Go play at this Design-it-Yourself Store!"
Operating since 2001, Alluminare, an online design-it-yourself store has been gaining notable interest and recognition from the interior design and lighting worlds... You can play at designing with the freedom of a child and the security of a robust software technology (meaning it's idiot-proof) that allows you to do pretty much anything you want.

September 10, 2009: "Design Happens: Custom Wallpaper & More"
I just spent a very fun 10 minutes playing with their custom wallpaper tool, which lets you drag and drop a variety of patterns and colors, size them up and down, and see them displayed with a couple of furniture options.

September 2009: "DESIGNER - Rachel Cave"
I've long been a fan of designer Rachel Cave, and now she has a new collaboration with Alluminare. They are now carrying Rachel's designs where you can customize a whole host of products with her patterns in any colorway you want. Items include cushions, wallpaper, lampshades, and fabric.

September 2009: "The Hardware Aisle: Customizable wallpaper, lighting and more"
This company lets you customize more than just one kind of item. In fact, they let you fiddle with the colors, size and designs of lighting fixtures, shades, wallpaper, pillows and fabric - oh my! Technically, you could do a whole coordinated look in your favorite pattern... I lost a good chunk of time experimenting online with the different scales and hues of wallpaper patterns. You'll get obsessed with finding the just right mix - but you'll have fun doing it! Bonus: The custom looks come at pretty affordable prices, especially when compared to the designer duds you find sold exclusively to the trade.

May 20, 2009: "Start-Up Toolkit: Twitter Can Get You Business"
They run a site where you can customize lighting fixtures, pillows, and other things with a special fabric. A customer can visit, take any design and fully customize it - shrinking or expanding the pattern, changing the colors and more. They're always looking for new patterns. Friday [Shamblen] has been recruiting designers via the web, who then submit patterns to add to Alluminare's collection - and she found their latest designer via Twitter.

July 2005: "Lighten Up"
"Today's lighting possibilities extend far beyond the 'single light in the center of the room' look," says Friday Shamblen, owner of Alluminare..."For example, pendants can deliver both task and general lighting," Shamblen says. "A pendant over the dining room table, coupled with a dimmer, lets you choose bright lighting for family mealtime or softer, more subdued lighting for creating drama at a dinner party."

April 2005: "Light Up a Dining Room"
Designer Linda Allen on getting the look for less: "In a dining room, it's ideal to have fixtures with light shining up and down so that you will illuminate both the ceiling and the space where you'll dine. A fabric shade [like the one above] lets light filter through."

ATLANTA HOME IMPROVEMENT
December 2003: "Let There Be Light"
Many customers prefer more delicate light in the kitchen. For this reason, a major trend in kitchen lighting today is a movement away from intense, focused, track lighting and toward recessed and pendant lighting that offers broader, more diffused light throughout the kitchen.
"Diffused light is a nice way to light your entire kitchen, especially at the end of a long day," says Friday Shamblen, owner of Alluminare.
LUCKY
June 2002: "Who's Hot"
[Friday Shamblen] learned how good lighting could change a person's attitude and mood, and liked her new hobby so much that she decided to quit her job as a Web developer. Following some research into the lighting market, she began producing lamps for friends, and her work found its way into offices around town... "I love bringing warmer, more interesting light into a room," she explains. "I think everyone should always be bathed in a pretty glow."
