How to Replace a Lighting Fixture
I'm thinking about replacing an existing fixture, but I'm not sure if I want to take on a complicated project. How do I know when it's time to change to something new, and what will I have to do?
There will come a time, inevitably, when you will need to replace lighting fixtures. If the globe is broke or cracked, that’s usually a good time to do it. Also, lighting fixture styles go out of fashion. When that happens, you probably want to replace them and update your look.
Replacing lighting fixtures is a simple job, but if you've never done it then it could seem difficult. You do want to be safe about it, so follow these tips:
First, turn on the light, then go to your electrical service panel and turn the circuit off. If the light goes out, you can be confident you turned off the right circuit. Otherwise, you'll end up being fried chicken before you get your lighting fixtures replaced.
Disconnect the wires that connect your old lighting fixture to the house circuit wires. This may involve removing the old canopy.
Follow the instructions that came with your new lighting fixture and connect the wires from your new fixture to the house wires in the ceiling. When installation is complete, screw in a lightbulb.
Turn the circuit back on. If the light comes on, you'll know you did it right. If it doesn't, then turn the circuit off again and check your wiring connections -- they may have come loose in the process, or you may have not connected the correct wires. When all else fails, check the lightbulb itself and make sure it's a good one.
See how easy it to replace your lighting fixture? But safety first: if in doubt, call a licensed electrician!
